Chapter 11

Nicolette had never woken up with a man in her bed. It felt oddly comfortable. At first she just laid there, watching David sleep. He looked so relaxed, with his mouth open and a little bit of drool hanging from it. Only the rumble of her stomach prompted her to get up when she remembered she had not eaten since lunch the day before. Her dinner had been delightfully interrupted. She attempted to slide out of the bed without waking him but was unsuccessful.

“Are you sneaking away?” She loved the way his voice sound muffled and rumbled when he first woke up.

“I was just going to get us some breakfast.”

“Let the maids do that.”

Nicolette was embarrassed to admit that she couldn’t afford a full-time maid. She hired a girl to come in twice a week to clean, but otherwise she did for herself. He must have guessed at what her silence meant.

“I’m sorry.” He reached out, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her in. “I didn’t mean to make you feel...”

“Inadequate?”

She felt his head bob up and down.

“I thought your shop was successful?” he said.

“It is, but that doesn’t mean I can afford to spend money unnecessarily. It is only me living here, so why should I need a full-time maid?”

“I thought all women needed maids.”

His tone sounded sincere. “Women would prefer a maid, so that they can spend their time on other tasks, such as taking care of a husband or child. I have neither of those. So I have nothing else to take care of but myself.”

“It would horrify my mother is she had to make her own breakfast.”

Nicolette stifled a giggle by burying her face in his shoulder. Truthfully, her mother would be too.

“I can think of something that might calm my hunger for the time being...”

David rolled them both over, pinning her down into the soft bed. The weight of him on top of her felt good, and she ran her palms up and down his strong arms. He began kissing her lips, and she returned the hunger.

“We should get out of bed.” Nicolette hated to stop him, but knew she would have clients arriving soon and didn’t think he would want to be found here by the biggest gossips in the city.

“Why? This feels good to me.”

It felt good to her as well, especially as he shifted his weight, placing his hard erection against the opening of her legs. She knew it would take very little for her open for him, allowing him to satisfy them both. Only then they would be caught together for sure.

“I have a reputation to worry about,” she said against his lips as they continued trying to kiss her into submission. “I have fought hard to attain the respectability I have.”

She felt him growl against her ear, sending a shiver through her. Then he lifted his weight off her body. For a moment, she regretted her decision as she felt the loss.

“Very well, but that breakfast better be delicious.
